Many people are apprehensive or afraid to be hypnotized. This is usually due to a misunderstanding about what hypnosis is and does for people. They are used to seeing the “Hollywood” version of hypnosis in the movies, on TV or on cruise ships where the person being hypnotized is completely under the hypnotist’s control and at the mercy of their suggestions. This is a frightening thought.
The truth is that the people who choose to go up on stage are already MOTIVATED to be in the limelight the second they raise their hands. Therefore, these people are giving the hypnotist permission to tell them what to do. The people who get the giggles or who are really not that motivated are then asked to go back to their seats and just a few people are left who get hypnotized and follow the suggestions readily.
Another reason people tend to be afraid of hypnosis is because of a negative connotation that hypnosis is somehow related to the devil. This is a belief that is quite old and not reflective of the clinical applications of hypnotherapy. The subconscious mind is not controlled by evil and negativity. You will only believe suggestions if they are consistent with what you truly want and need in life. You won’t ever do anything you don’t want to do when you are hypnotized. However, if you are looking for a hypnotherapist to work with in addition to using the self-hypnosis CDs, make sure you interview them and get several referrals. |
